In an exciting new initiative from our colleagues Dr. Nicky Morgan and Dr. Matthew Jones, we are thrilled to announce the establishment of a sector-wide platform designed to revolutionise pedagogical content through the development of co-created digital escape rooms. This innovative project aims to enhance student engagement, improve the overall student experience, and drive positive student outcomes.

The Power of Active Learning
Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of “active” teaching methods, such as digital escape rooms, in promoting student outcomes and deepening understanding of core concepts. Despite their potential, current efforts in this area remain highly specialized and lack the ability to be easily translated across different sectors. This gap in research has shown to impact student experience, attainment, and employability.

Our Vision
This project seeks to bridge this gap by creating a university-wide platform for the design and development of interactive digital escape rooms. These escape rooms will be co-created with input from various schools and departments, ensuring they are tailored to drive active engagement with core content and elevate student outcomes.

Monitoring and Feedback
To ensure the effectiveness of this initiative, we will utilize feedback and analytical tools to monitor student engagement and outcomes. This comprehensive approach will allow us to develop a complete picture of the wider impact of digital escape rooms on academic progress within higher education.

Meet the Team
Dr. Nicky Morgan is a Specialist Microbiology Technician within the Directorate of Human and Natural Sciences at the School of Science, Engineering and Environment. With a passion for developing innovative practical experiences, Nicky is dedicated to supporting Biomedicine education.

Dr. Matthew Jones is a Lecturer in Physiology and the Deputy Programme Leader for the Biomedical Science programme within the School of Science, Engineering and Environment. Matthew’s primary pedagogical interests lie in the design, development, and adaptation of innovative learning technologies to drive graduate outcomes and boost employability.
